After being wowed by this place last spring, we vowed to return again this year. After a soggy month of May, the final weekend of this notoriously moody month of transition proved to be a glorious one.
We finished the four hour drive to Thomas Canyon Campground just in time to capture the last hour of daylight. I drove back down the canyon about two miles to this spot that we passed on the drive in.
The view up the Right Fork of Lamoille Creek from across-canyon. Mount Gilbert takes in the last few rays of light:
As I was racing back to camp, the colors really began to intensify. Unable to really get a good look at the area near our camp along Lamoille Creek earlier, I hoped I could get back in time to capture something. Thankfully, the shoreline 100 feet from our tent provided a spectacular view:
With the developed National Forest campground being surprisingly quiet, I set up the tripod for a hopeful startrail in a nearby empty campsite. The near full-moon lit up an aspen stand and two unnamed peaks across Lamoille Canyon:
Not feeling particularly ambitious, I rolled out of bed at 4:45 to the creek nearby to get the first rays of sun lighting up Peak 10055:
After relaxing with some coffee at camp, we went up and explored the Right Fork of Lamoille Creek. Recent snows combined with warm temperatures made for quite the water show. Here, Mount Gilbert towers over the Right Fork:
Another scene of the main fork of Lamoille Creek from near our camp:
An afternoon walk up to Island Lake provided a moody yet relaxing setting for some pineapple vodka lemonade slushies:
Back down to the main canyon for sunset. This is the northern view from Lamoille Creek of the Verdi Peak massif:
About a quarter mile away from the above shot, I was able to find this wild scene, this time facing south at the Liberty Peak basin, where we would hopefully romp around tomorrow morning before heading back to SLC:
Sunday morning we packed up camp and headed back up to the top of Lamoille Canyon for a go at the snowy Liberty Peak basin, and hopefully Liberty Lake:
Mandy and Ellie making their way through the soft, slushy snow:
5 shot pano of Liberty Lake:
And then the always slightly melancholic march back to the trailhead. It was time to head home:
